plugins category image wordpress-tips category image An Easy Gallery Option

There are literally hundreds of ways you can make a gallery within WordPress, with various options, such as using gallery plugins, external scripts and plain ‘ol html code.

One option you may not be aware of though, is to use two plugins combined that run on the LightBox display structure.

Here are 6 images that I have uploaded to demonstrate how this gallery looks on the page, and then we will take a look at what is involved in setting up a gallery such as this.

Personally, I am not a huge fan of the Media Uploader, [I much prefer to use ftp and my own-named image directory] however, for this exercise, I have used what WordPress specifically provides for this task.

So, what did I need to make this simple gallery?

1. Two plugins: Lightbox 2 [basic Lightbox which provides Ligtbox functionality] and Add Lightbox [automatically adds the rel="lightbox[ID-OF-THE-POST]” to images linked in a post. The ID-OF-THE-POST is unique per post so all images per post are grouped in one lightbox set.]

2. A few assorted images – I deliberately chose a mix of varying sizes for this example.

3. 5 minutes of your time.

And that’s it! What could be easier for a simple little gallery?

plugins category image Admin Functionality Extended

Two plugins that I highly recommend are:

1. Admin Management Xtended:
When you want to edit properties of posts/pages, you’ll have to open the edit page, set the new options and save the post/page… which obviously takes time. For those who are using WordPress as a CMS, it’s important to be able to manage contents easily and quickly. That’s what this plugin helps to do.

It adds some icons to the Manage posts/pages view with AJAX-driven CMS-known functions like toggling post/page visibility, changing publication date and title without having to open the edit screens or reload the page. Plus changing page order via Drag’n’Drop *, inline category management and inline tag management.

2. Reveal ID’s for WP Admin
With WordPress 2.5 being released, the post IDs in the Manage Posts/Pages view were removed as it is. Propably due to the fact that the common user dont need them. However, for advanced WordPress Users/ developers those IDs were quite interesting for some plugins or template tags.

What this plugin does is to reveal most removed entry IDs on admin pages, showing the entry IDs, as it was in versions prior to 2.5
